McKinney soccer players Robert Camarillo, Ryan Puhl and Chris Groff, and assistant coach Daniel R. Lowe did their part to help Region I to a 4-2 win over Region II in the Senior Showcase at Southwestern University.

Lowe, who will be the boys soccer coach at McKinney Boyd next year, and San Angelo Central coach Joe Rodriguez used a 3-4-3 system with a withdrawn forward to jump out to an early lead in the first five minutes.

Frisco's Gerardo Gaona scored the first first goal on an assist from Sergio Solis (Granbury). A few minutes later Solis set up a score for Eric Ferraris (Justin Northwest) for a 2-0 lead less than 15 minutes into the match.

Brian Martinez (Flower Mound) made the score 3-0 with his goal off an assist from Brandon Cain (San Angelo Central). As the whistle blew to end the half Solis put a shot from outside the 18 into the net off a deflected cross from Puhl.

The Region I defense was also solid in the first half, thanks to strong play from Camarillo and Frisco goalkeeper Josh Mikulewicz, who had two one-on-one saves.

Region I was able to control possession of the match through the strong midfield play of Groff, Ganona, Ryan Sadler (Wichita Falls Rider), Brandon Cain (San Angelo Central), Alan Green (Odessa Permian), Russel Liakos (Mansfield), and Region I match MVP Brian Martinez (Flower Mound).

The forwards for Region I were able to combine well and score through the hard work of Puhl, Eric Ferraris (Justin Northwest), Sergio Solis (Granbury), Jorge Rodriguez (Fort Worth Carter-Riverside), and Raul Richie (Wichita Falls)

In the second half, Region II were able to take advantage of the field conditions with the Region I defenders losing their footing on the wet pitch. creating a one-on -one that was put past second half goalkeeper Blake Bahlman (San Angelo Central).

The second half was more evenly matched as the teams got used to playing together. creating opportunities for both sides.

Mikulewicz returned to his playing days on the field., coming into the match in the withdrawn forward position for Region I.

Several goal scoring opportunities were defended well as Stephen Brown (Arlington Martin) and Camarillo cleared shots off the line in the goal. Blake Bahlman (San Angelo Central) made some key saves.

Region I had scoring opportunities created by Mikulewicz,

Ryan Sadler (Wichita Falls Rider), and Brian Martinez (Flower Mound) as Brandon Cain (San Angelo Central) and Eric Ferraris (Justin Northwest). But Region II's goalkeeper came up with saves.

Region II was able to get another goal at about the 60th minute off a well struck ball outside the 18 from a free kick, closing the deficit to 3-2.

However. Region I countered a few minutes later as a cross from Groff found his high school and club teammate Puhl at the back post to put in the final goal of the match.
