Police approved to get a new toy
By Tasha Hayton, Staff Writer
The Coppell Police Department will now own a police SWAT vehicle after the city council on Tuesday approved the request to buy a $55,000 SWAT vehicle from The Armored Group for the Coppell Police Department.
Since the creation of the special weapons and tactics team in 2000 and the activities of the organized crime unit, it is important for Coppell police to have an unmarked vehicle that can transport more than a few officers to other cities for searches and arrests, said Lt. Steve Thomas, public information officer for the Coppell Police Department.
Recently, Coppell police have been involved in cases in Carrollton, Irving and Dallas, he said.
The police department currently has the equipment needed to use in the SWAT vehicle except for the radio, which will need to be added on, said Sgt. Tony Pletcher of the Coppell Police Department.
The vehicle is 14 feet long and 8 feet wide and could hold up to 26 officers.
For its purpose, he said, “it’s the finest vehicle I’ve ever come across.”
It’s a multifaceted vehicle and could be utilized in many ways outside tactical use, Thomas said.
Super Bowl
The council approved a resolution providing support for Super Bowl XLV in 2011.
The resolution provides governmental services at no cost to the NFL or the two teams.
Coppell was asked by mayors in the North Texas region to approve the resolution to provide unity in the area for the game, City Manager Jim Witt said.
However, Coppell will probably not see much impact from the Super Bowl coming to the North Texas region other than the possible utilization of a hotel at Interstate 635 and Belt Line Road.
The only other potential affect on Coppell would be parking in the city for people attending the Super Bowl who would then be shuttled to the stadium.
In other business
The council approved zoning changes for Pizza Inn, Cool Star Beverage and Tetco for additions to the current buildings.

" Too bad the media (once again) went with the comedic approach referring to pieces of life-saving equipment as a "toy" implying that officers will just play around with it or that it's a waste of people's money. Oh well. What's new. "
