City adds three red light cameras
By BRIAN PORTER/Managing Editor
Three new red light cameras have been installed at the intersections of northbound and southbound Rowlett Road and Chaha and Eastbound State Highway 66 at Chiesa Road.
A warning period will last until July 17 at these intersections, during which warning notices will be issued to red light violators and no fines will be issued.
Beginning July 17, the registered owner of a vehicle which runs a red light will receive a notice of violation which costs $75. The fine is a civil penalty.
Many municipalities, including Rowlett, indicate photo enforcement has been effective in changing the driving behavior of motorists. If drivers slow down and stop for red lights, preventing future accidents, the cameras accomplish their job.
The cameras operate 24 hours a day and capture still photographs and video of every vehicle that runs a red light at the intersection. A notice of violation is sent to the vehicle’s owner. Violators may view a 12-second video clip at a web address provided by the vendor ACS. Photo enforcement warning signs, alerting drivers to the red light cameras, are installed at the intersections.
Details about the program, including frequently asked questions and how to pay the violation, are posted on the Rowlett Police Department’s Web site at www.rowlettpolice.com.
Two other intersections have cameras installed in Rowlett. They are northbound and southbound Rowlett Road at Hickox Road and northbound and southbound Rowlett Road at Beech Street. An additional camera will be installed in the near future at the intersection of State Highway 66 and Dalrock Road.
The city of Rowlett contracts with Affiliated Computer Services to provide the red light camera enforcement program. ACS is installing and maintaining all equipment related to this program and process.

" Why is this being printed on the 16th of July when the warning period expires on 17 July.
Common practice is to allow 30 days notice. "
