Council may outlaw garage conversions
DAN EAKIN, Staff Writer
The Lewisville City Council will look into a staff recommendation that prohibits residents from converting, altering or enclosing their garages for use outside of parking vehicles.
The proposal was on the council agenda for action at Monday night’s regular meeting, but was tabled.
The council discussed the matter in a workshop prior to the regular meeting and agreed to the addition.
Currently, the Lewisville City Code does not specifically prohibit conversion, enclosure or alteration of any garage for any purpose.
“Due to increasing traffic loads and inadequate off-street parking, staff is recommending that an amendment to the existing ordinance regulating parking be implemented,” said Mayor Gene Carey.
The proposed ordinance is expected to be submitted again at a meeting in the near future.
In other business Monday night, the council granted a variance to allow the Farmers Market to continue through Nov. 17 in Old Town Lewisville.
In the past, the Old Town Business Association (OTBA) has conducted a farmers market from mid-May through October.
“Because of the success of the farmers market, the OTBA is requesting that city council grant a variance to allow the Farmers Market to continue until Nov. 17,” Carey said.
The council voted unanimously to grant the request.
Prior to acting on agenda items, Carey read a proclamation designating Oct. 15-19 as Chamber of Commerce Week in Lewisville.
Don Smith, president of the Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce, and Matt McCormick, chamber president, were on hand to accept the proclamation.
Smith told the mayor and council that he appreciated the good cooperation that the chamber and city have had together over the years.

" Allow the garage conversions as long as it meets the building codes of a room of the house. A house is not ever REQUIRED to have a garage so who is the council to make this illegal? "

" Actually, zoning usually requires a garage of a certain size when builders want to create a new sub-division. I'm for this, because too many people park on the street, and there is no room for visitors to park, and the streets are so narrow anyways that it makes hard for 2 vehicles to pass each other when there are all these cars parked on the street. " If the City Council passes this recommendation then they should also fund the hotel bills for when my kids come home from college so they can have a place to stay. And at Holiday time, I will also send them the hotel bill for my family that visits from out of town. Going down this slippery slope of dictating what CITIZENS can or cannot do to their own property is very scary to me. Then what is next? limiting how many cars you can have? how many kids you have? Remember, those of you on the City Council are voted in and can be voted OUT just as easy. You are not there to tell CITIZENS what they can or can't do but to make sure our water gets to us clean, our trash gets picked up and that the polise and fire dept are funded. You are NOT a stinking Home Owners Association. So get a real job and leave the meddling to our wives....sorry honey "
