Council regulates residents’ backyard buildings
By SARAH BLASKOVICH, Staff Writer
The Southlake City Council unanimously approved a change to guidelines about residents’ tool sheds, gazebos and other personal-use buildings.
According to the ordinance, outdoor buildings and Portable On-Demand Storage units (PODS) must comprise no more than 3 percent of Southlake residents’ property.
The ordinance also states that outdoor buildings that are larger than 500 square feet must have certain aesthetic qualities, such as a minimum of two colors, with the principal color limited to white, beige or natural shades of green and brown. If the structure is brick, it must match the home, and metal buildings must be painted with a non-metallic matte-finish. The buildings also may not be taller than 20 feet.
“The quality of material has been a concern,” Baker said.
The city also regulated the use of PODS, which are becoming more prevalent, Baker said. PODS are used as a temporary storage unit, sometimes during the remodeling of a home.
The new law requires residents to place PODS on the driveway as far from the street as possible. It also requires residents to obtain a permit, which expires based on what the PODS are being used for. If a resident is remodeling a home, for instance, the permit is valid for 90 days and cannot be renewed more than twice in 30-day increments.
Baker said he wants the PODS to be as “least obtrusive as possible.”
