City reminds public of rules about sales, signs
BY DAN EAKIN, Staff Writer
Garage sale season is well under way in the Lewisville area, and Eric Ferris, city director of community development, reminds the public of rules about garage sales and signs promoting them.
Ferris said a total of 678 garage sale permits have been issued since Jan.1. A total of 417 garage sale permits, more than half for the year, have been issued in Lewisville in the last three months. They include 157 in August, 145 in September and 115 so far in October.
“Anyone planning to have a garage sale should first go to city hall and obtain a permit.” Ferris said. “Only two garage sales during any 12-month period are allowed at the same location.”
Only one sign is permitted, not to exceed 2 square feet, and must be on the property where the sale is taking place. Any other signs at any location other than at the sale site are illegal. Although garage sale signs do not require a permit, a permit to conduct the garage sale is required.
“The most common violation associated with garage sales is the placement of off-premise signs,” Ferris said. “Even though this is a violation of city codes, city staff normally removes and confiscates illegal signs on a routine basis in lieu of issuing citations.”
Ferris said police work on weekends picking up garage sale signs that have been illegally placed on street rights-of-way or on property other than at the sale site location.
The ordinance also states:
“The tangible personal property offered at an occasional sale shall be sold only on the premises of the owner or lessee of the property where the sale is conducted and such owner or lessee shall be the legal owner of such tangible property at the time of such sale. Such sales shall be confined to the garage, patio or carport on such premises.”
Garage sale permits can obtained at the Building Inspection Division, Central Permitting Counter, located on the second floor of City Hall. City Hall is located at 151 W. Church Street. For information regarding these types of permits, call the Building Inspection Division at 972-219-3470.
