Red light cameras coming to Lewisville intersections
BY DAN EAKIN, Staff Writer
With several area cities already using cameras to photograph vehicles running red lights, Lewisville may be one of the next.
Lewisville Police Chief Russ Kerbow said Tuesday that three intersections have been named as definite locations where the red light enforcement cameras will be installed initially within the next few months, with more locations to be named at a later date.
Cameras will be erected at Interstate 35 and Round Grove Road, I-35 and State Highway 121 and at Lake Vista Drive and State Highway 121.
The Lewisville City Council approved a contract last summer with Redflex Traffic Systems of Terrell to have cameras placed at up to 20 locations in Lewisville.
Kerbow said the city at first expected some of the cameras would have been installed by last September. However, he said earlier projected dates were due to a misunderstanding between the city’s legal staff and the contractor.
Kerbow said studies have been conducted to determine at which intersections and approaches red lights are run most frequently.
“There may be one camera placed at an intersection, or as many as four,” he said.
When a vehicle runs a red light, a camera will automatically take a picture of its license plate, Kerbow explained. The owner of the vehicle will receive a citation with a fine of $75. Under the contract, the revenue from the fines will be divided, though not equally, between the city and Redflex.
According to the agreement, Redflex will receive $48 from the first 90 fully-paid citations, then $37 from the next 80, for a total of $7,360. The city’s portion of that amount would be $27 from the first 90, then $37 from the next 80, for a total of $5,390. After that, fees vary.
“The primary purpose for installing red light enforcement cameras is to improve public safety,” said Kerbow. “It is not just to generate additional revenue.”
“It is difficult to predict how much revenue would be generated since we do not know exactly how many cameras will be installed and the number of violations that will be captured,” he said.
While exact locations for the remainder of the cameras have not yet been determined, Kerbow said other intersections have been named as possible sites.
Other possible sites include at 2300 SH 121 and FM 544; 400 Round Grove Road and 2400 MacArthur Blvd.; Edmonds Lane and Main Street; 600 SH 121 and MacArthur Blvd. (northbound frontage road); 2300 Business 121 and 100 Corporate Drive; and 1600 Business 121 and 100 W. Southwest Pkwy.
