Support the arts

Published: Friday, November 14, 2008 1:54 PM CST
All that glitters will definitely be gold during Support the Arts in Style when The Republic Group, a Dallas-based insurance provider, will host a benefit luncheon for Chamberlain Performing Arts and Cross Timbers Youth Orchestra. The event will feature Tiffany & Co. jewelry which will be modeled by board members from both organizations and event co-chairs Shelly Cronin and Julie Karnes. Jon Loring, author and design director for Tiffany & Co., will also be on hand discuss his new book, "Tiffany Style." The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 11 at Watters Creek mixed-used development in Allen.

The luncheon is the brainchild of Pam Wendland, executive director for Cross Timers Youth Orchestra.

"The Republic Group is very supportive of the community and I thought they would be particularly interested in an event that focused on women," she said.

Cross Timbers Youth Orchestra is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, allows students to participate in youth string orchestras, a wind ensemble, a classic guitar orchestra, a family drumming orchestra and recording studios as well as the city of McKinney parks and recreation’s beginner’s music education outreach program.

Chamberlain Performing Arts is a Plano-based not-for-profit pre-professional ballet company. Under the direction of founder and artistic director Kathy Chamberlain, this year marks the beginning of the company’s 25th year serving the communities of Plano, Richardson, Dallas and the surrounding areas.

"I met Pam Wendland when she was director for Arts of Collin County. She and I had an immediate rapport and she came to me and asked if I would be interested in being one of the two groups that benefited from this luncheon," Chamberlain said. "They're both [Cross Timbers and The Republic Group] first-class organizations. We're eager to have the involvement of the different community organizations and businesses within the community."

Once Wendland learned Tiffany's Jon Loring would be in the Dallas area promoting his book, she knew he would be a good fit for the event.

"Jon Loring is only the third senior design in its [Tiffany & Co.] history; he's an American icon. To have him in Dallas speaking is truly a unique opportunity," Wendland said. "Without our underwriters -- The Republic Group, Tiffany & Co. and Watters Creek -- it wouldn’t be possible, and we're grateful to all of our sponsors. And the focus of it all is young artists."

Loring’s appearance at the luncheon is part of a promotional tour for his book in the Dallas area. Loring has produced a heavily-illustrated, meticulously researched 304-page volume in which he tracks the evolution of American taste as seen through the eyes of Tiffany & Co. The book takes a look at the milestone events and personalities that marked the jeweler’s rise to prominence, starting with the early acquisitions of its founder, Charles Lewis Tiffany.

The event will be one of the first to take place at Watters Creek, the 52-acre development located at the corner of U.S. 75 and Bethany Drive in Allen. The development serves as the commercial heart of the larger 500-acre Montgomery Farm development. The resort-style development incorporates a complete mix of uses, including the creek-side Village Green, interactive public art, retail, dining, office space and residential lofts.

"It is just going to be such a first class event. Pam just did a spectacular job of getting the community behind it," Chamberlain said. "The setting is going to be beautiful."

"Collin County is an active and vibrant area where people get involved to support the arts and have the desire to support young artists," Wendland said.

Tickets are $100 per person and are available at ctyo.org or by calling Pam Wendland at 214-232-4545. Space is limited, so reservations will be honored on a first-come, first-served basis.

Prior to joining Tiffany, Mr. Loring was the New York Bureau Chief of Architectural Digest, as well as one of the magazine’s principal editorial contributors. Mr. Loring also served as a professor of art at the graduate school of the University of California.

Mr. Loring earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Yale University in 1960. After graduating, he continued his studies for four more years at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Since 1964, his prints and paintings have been exhibited in Europe and the United States.

Some of his works have become part of the permanent collections of many museums, including The Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and Yale University Art Gallery. In 1988 Mr. Loring was given the Design and Art Society's "Edith Wharton Award for Excellence." In 1996 he received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute, and was given a "Distinction in Design" award from Fashion Group International. He received the prestigious Pratt Legends Award in 2002.

Mr. Loring continues to write on art and design. He serves on the Acquisitions Committee of the Museum of Modern Art's Department of Prints and Illustrated Books. He is also a serious collector of 20th-century furniture and ceramics. Mr. Loring's interests in cooking and interior design have been recognized in major publications, including The New York Times Magazine, Bon Appetit, Food and Wine, Architectural Digest, House & Garden, L'Oeil, Arbitare, GQ, House Beautiful, Metropolitan Home, Gala, The New Yorker, and French Vogue.

" Could the date be wrong of this event? Says Nov. 11th. That was over a month ago. Might hurt ticket sales........ "
