Canright to run for school board
by Heather M. Smith, Staff writer
Robert Canright has filed to run for Place 7 on the school board ballot.
“Our focus must be on educating children, not buying stuff our children do not need,” Canright said. “The finances of the district are on the ropes.”
Canright said there are repeated teacher and staff layoffs while the board members plan to spend money on wireless cell towers. He has three main points for his candidacy: to have better leaders for a better future, to improve elementary school mathematics and to improve elementary school reading and writing.
“The Carroll ISD is rated Exemplary, with 100 percent of the Carroll schools rated Exemplary, while Plano West Senior High has not been a Recognized school since 2006, and today not a single high school in Plano is rated Exemplary,” Canright said.
Canright warned that as Plano’s reputation for quality education declines, so will property values and students’ prospects for a good future. Canright urged citizens to go to the polls on election day to change the system.
“Ten percent of registered voters in Allen and Frisco voted in the last ISD election compared to five percent in Plano,” Canright said. “If we want better schools, we need our citizens to vote.”
“America is in the midst of a deep and long-lasting leadership crisis,” Canright said. “Today’s leaders cannot deal with today’s problems, so they will never succeed with tomorrow’s problems. We must educate our children to be better leaders and empower them to heal our country.”
In his campaign, Canright pledged to prepare Plano’s children to “succeed and prosper in the challenging and uncertain future they face.”
Canright is the creator of the Texas Ascendant Campaign, a road map to prosperity for children, and founder of the Timeless Way Foundation, a Texas education think tank. He is also a founding member of the McDermott Road Church of Christ, where he is a Sunday school teacher and a worship coordinator. He has been a resident of Plano for 16 years and has two children in Plano schools.
Canright holds a bachelor of science in mathematics, a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering and a master’s of science in electrical engineering. In his professional life, Canright is a senior member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers and is a licensed professional engineer. He is also a certified math and science teacher and has taught the two subjects in Texas public schools. Canright is the author of the book, “Achieve Lasting Happiness.”
