All-Collin County: Coach of the Year
BY Kevin Hageland, Staff Writer
Lovejoy head coach Jim Bob Puckett was gracious when informed he had been selected as the All-Collin County Coach of the Year.
“Well thank you so much,” he said.
But Puckett was also quick to deflect any praise directed specifically at him.
“It’s not me, it’s these kids that went out and executed. We also have our Leopard Nation and they are unbelievable. From the families to the friends, this really is a community award.”
Under Puckett’s guidance, Lovejoy has made the postseason both years they were eligible. The Leopards stepped up their game this season, going 13-1 and advancing to the Class 3A Division I State Semifinals before losing to Abilene Wylie.
“We almost had to pinch ourselves when we got back to the office,” Puckett said. “We got that trophy and the medals and it started to sink in; we realized what all we had accomplished.”
But for as much as the team has done, the Leopards want more. The Lovejoy coaches watched the state finals in person and have already set next season’s theme as “Finish it.”
“I was in Allen for 18 years, so I’ve seen what this area is capable of,” Puckett said. “If Allen, Southlake Carroll and Prosper can win, then there is no reason we can’t too.”
