Candidate forum to address health care topics


A candidate forum for Collin County Commissioners Court (judges and commissioners for Precincts 2 and 4) will take place from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16 at Collin College's Spring Creek Campus, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, Room C104. The major subject for this forum is health care in Collin County.

Love is Funny Film Series presents 'Midnight'

Join the Allen Public Library in the Civic Auditorium for a FREE screening of "Midnight" at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16. In this 1939 film, an American gold-digger finds herself penniless in Paris. But when impersonating a baroness, she finds several ways to make money. If only she can avoid stepping into the same trap she always does: falling in love with a poor man. Richmond Punch Jazz Quartet coming Sunday

To celebrate African-American history, the Richmond Punch Jazz Quartet presents a blend of jazz, classical and gospel music at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, at the Allen Public Library, 300 N. Allen Drive. Featuring a violin, piano, bass and drums, this quartet is known for performing a wide range of musical genres.

THA presents free lecture on skin-care needs for cancer patients

Join Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen for an evening discussion regarding "Cancer and Skin Care: Loving Your Skin While Fighting the Good Fight." Dr. Tanya Rodgers, a dermatologist on the medical staff, will focus on recommendations and advice for women with cancer and their skin-care concerns. Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and drug therapies may have special needs that exceed tried-and-true skin care routines.

The free program, a part of the hospital's "Advances in Medicine" lecture series, will be presented 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18 at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen, 1105 Central Expressway North. Allen to host weekend of home, garden exhibits

The fifth-annual Collin County Home & Garden Show, featuring a variety of exhibits highlighting the latest in home and garden products, kitchens and baths, pools and spas, building and remodeling will be Feb. 19-21 at the Allen Event Center. The show will also feature seminars, complimentary wine and gourmet food sampling and appearances by Jason Cameron, celebrity host of "Man Caves" on DIY-TV as well as Paul James, celebrity host of HGTV's "Gardening by the Yard."

The show will run 2-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21. Ticket prices are $9/adults; children 16 and under are free. There is a special Friday-only admission of $5 for seniors 65 and up.

Allen participates in state effort

The statewide warrant roundup begins Feb. 19. The municipal court and police department will again be participating and have scheduled the weekend of Feb. 27-28 to send out teams of officers to serve the outstanding warrants in Allen and surrounding cities.

The roundup will concentrate on warrants from 2009 and 2008. In preparation of this monthlong event, post cards are being mailed to encourage people with outstanding warrants to pay before the roundup. Currently there are 2,542 outstanding warrants from 2009 totaling $725,321 and 1,486 from 2008 totaling $426,242. The city offers payment options of credit card, money order and cash or if eligible, a payment plan is available under the state collection program.


Warm up with a good book

Come in from the cold and warm up with a good book. Stop by the library and pick up a Winter Reading Club log, then read 10 books and return the log to the library by Feb. 20 to receive a special winter prize. For ages 2 through fifth grade.

Allen Americans release promo schedule for remainder of season

With nine home games remaining in the regular season, the expansion club is pulling out all the stops to keep fans entertained. Highlights of the schedule include Feb. 26's "Pink in the Rink," a night devoted to spreading awareness about breast cancer through a partnership with the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Saturday, March 6, will be a busy night with a thunderstick giveaway, courtesy of Dr. Ross Miller, and a double header with Allen High School playing Plano West High School prior to the Americans contest. The night is also the club's first "Pucks and Paws" event, where dog owners are encouraged to bring their canine friends to the pregame tailgate in The Village at Allen's Canine Commons dog park. During the evening, people who work in the health care industry will also be honored. The Americans will wear specialty jerseys in the St. Patrick's Day matchup with Missouri and will be giving out all sorts of prizes during Fan Appreciation Weekend March 19 and 20.

Exhibit celebrates days gone by

Rooms depicting a typical bungalow-style home of the 1920s and 30s in Allen are the inspiration for the "Home Sweet Home" display, the featured exhibit at the Allen Heritage Depot Museum through March.

Be an author

ALLen Reads has published a book written by people in the community each year of its program. This year's book is to be called "Moved by the Music," inspired by The Cellist of Sarajevo, Mozart Question and Mole Music, which portray music as an homage and a statement, a distraction and a secret, a form of self-fulfillment and as a paean to the resilience of the human spirit.

Author presentation, book signing event

Steven Galloway, author of The Cellist of Sarajevo, will be at the Allen Public Library on Saturday, March 6. At 10 a.m., a quartet from the Allen Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra will play Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor. The author will speak at 10:30 a.m., after which there will be a book signing opportunity. Borders Books will have books on sale at the library or people are welcome to bring their own.

Scholarship available for AHS seniors

The 2010 Community Scholarship application is now available to all Allen High School seniors graduating with the Class of 2010. The application, which is coordinated by the Foundation for Allen Schools, offers students the opportunity to apply for 13 different scholarships on one form. Applications are due no later than 3 p.m. Monday, March 8, and are available from the AHS College and Career Center or on the Foundation Web site at www.allenisd.org/foundation.

Allen Eagle Run to benefit Allen schools

Registration is underway for the second-annual Eagle Run, to take place Saturday, March 6. The 1-mile fun run begins at 8 a.m.; the 5K race begins around 8:30 a.m. The event, co-sponsored by the Foundation For Allen Schools and the Allen Council of PTAs, takes place at the Allen Heritage Center, 100 E. Main St.

Sign up now for citizens' academies

Sign-up is currently underway for the Citizens Police Academy and the Citizens Fire Academy. Both academies are free of charge and open to participants who live or work in Allen; however, space is limited.

Participants of the Citizens Police Academy are introduced to traffic-related laws, DWI stops, crime scene investigations, SWAT and K9, and participate in various field trips. Classes meet once a week for 12 weeks beginning March 4 at 6 p.m. Graduates are eligible for further training in two volunteer groups: Citizens On Patrol (COPs) and Volunteers In Policing (VIPs).

The Citizens Fire Academy provides information on everything from emergency operations to fire and life safety training. Participants actively participate in demonstrations and ride with on-duty firefighters on emergency calls. The academy meets from 7 to 9:30 p.m. one evening per week for 10 weeks and one optional Saturday beginning March 11. Graduates are eligible to participate in the Citizens Emergency Response Team (with additional training) and activities of the CFA Alumni.

APD offering crime alert service

The Allen Police Department is providing a new alert service through Citizen Observer, a Web-based resource which allows the APD to instantly update you about crimes, emergencies and other important information. All alerts are delivered via e-mail and are also available via text message on your cell phone.

The network also provides the public with the ability to provide anonymous tips via text message or the Web directly to the agency.
