Allen resident Michael Tischler recently traveled to Guadalajara Mexico on behalf of The Greyhound Adoption League of Texas (GALT) with “Cervantes,” (formerly David) a 3 year old retired racing greyhound that had participated in the racing circuit.  Repeat GALT adopters Rogers and Johanna Tomenson anxiously awaited the arrival of their newest greyhound family addition.

“Our greatest challenge was watching the weather to determine when Cervantes and Michael could fly,” says GALT co-founder Susie McQuade. “Our primary concern of course is for the health and welfare of the dog, and we wanted to make sure he would not get over-heated during the 2 hour flight from DFW to Guadalajara.”

“I’ll never forget when Mexican customs asked why I was traveling with this dog,” reflects Michael, a volunteer for GALT for nearly 3 years. “I answered that I was adopting the dog to a family. They misunderstood me and thought I said ‘abducting’. The situation was quickly cleared up, and they grinned as they said “adopting is good, abducting is bad.”

Rogers and Johanna met Michael and their newest family member, Cervantes, at the airport in Guadalajara. The Tomenson’s retired to Ajijic near Lake Chapala in 2000 from Canada, and Johanna was thrilled to be back “south”, as she had spent her early childhood in south Texas. But even with their many interests; the house was not a home without a dog.

“At just the time we decided to adopt a greyhound, GALT had accepted an influx of sixty something greyhounds from Valley Race Park in Harlingen, which I hadn’t known existed.   Well, don’t you think it made sense for a girl from the Rio Grand Valley to rescue a Valley greyhound?” says Johanna.  “I was thrilled and convinced that it was all meant to be, and so it was.”

That was 8 years ago, when their first greyhounds, Don Quixote and Dulcinea were adopted, and they added Sancho to their family in 2009. Unfortunately Don Quixote died earlier this year, which left a void. Cervantes has quickly adapted to his new home in Mexico with sibling greyhounds Dulcinea and Sancho.

Michael’s trip was a fast one – down and back in 2 days! After a day of sightseeing Ajijic’s cobblestone streets and stunning Cathedral’s, Michael returned to North Texas. “It was truly an unforgettable experience,” says Michael. “I hope I get the opportunity again to help this gentle breed find their forever homes.”

Since it’s inception in 2001, GALT has adopted more than 1700 greyhounds into their forever homes across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

About GALT:

GALT is a 501(c)(3) all-volunteer, non-profit group dedicated to placing all greyhounds, primarily those who have competed and trained for racing, into loving homes. GALT facilitates the adoption of greyhounds by providing kennel services and foster homes along with their medical needs, including spay and neuter, assisting them in the transition from track life to home life; and educating the public about why the greyhound has been a favored companion dog for more than 4,000 years. The website is www.GALTx.org
