Munnings attains Eagle Scout rank

MunningsAttains Eagle Scout Rank

Published: Tuesday, November 2, 2010 4:40 PM CDT
The highest honor obtainable from the Boy Scouts of America organization will be presented to a 15-year-old Coppell youth. Walter Smith Munnings will receive the Eagle Award in a Court of Honor presentation Nov. 6, 2010 at St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas.

Walter, the son of Wilton and Monica Munnings, received the award after earning 21 or more merit badges and completing his service project of an Outdoor Fire Pit benefiting the Coppell YMCA.

Munnings began Scouting in 2002 when he joined Cub Scout Pack 840 at Lee Elementary School. Walter later earned their highest award, the Arrow of Light.  In 2005, Munnings “crossed over” into Troop 914, where he regularly attended summer camp at Camp Constantine by Possum Kingdom Lake and recently participated in the Centennial National Scout Jamboree.

Troop 914 is sponsored by St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church.

The Coppell High School sophomore is a member of both the Junior Varsity football and basketball teams. Walter serves on the Coppell YMCA teen advisory committee.

A member of St. Luke "Community” United Methodist Church, Walter is an active member of the Youth group and serves with the Youth Usher Board, Youth Choir, Mandela – boys group, and volunteers in Children’s Church.

The fact that a boy is an Eagle Scout has always carried with it a special significance, not only in Scouting but also as he enters higher education, business or industry, and community service. The award is a performance-based achievement whose standards have been well-maintained over the years. Not every boy who joins a Boy Scout troop earns the Eagle Scout rank; only about 5 percent of all Boy Scouts do so. This represents more than 1.7 million Boy Scouts who have earned the rank since 1912. Nevertheless, the goals of Scouting—citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness—remain important for all Scouts, whether or not they attain the Eagle Scout rank.
