City to be featured on WFAA

ALLEN -- The city of Allen will take center stage Friday morning with an hour-and-a-half feature by Channel 8 WFAA's News 8 "Daybreak" program.

Between 50 and 100 Allenites will gather at Victory Plaza in Dallas on July 15 to appear live on the show's "Party on the Plaza" segment, which features a different North Texas community each time it airs. Featured guests include Mayor Steve Terrell and representatives from the Texas Stampede, Cabela's, Hydrous Wake Parks and Allen Community Outreach.

"This opportunity provides a fun way for Allen and the various cities to showcase our communities," said Karen Cromwell, tourism director for the city of Allen. "Our crowd will be featured off and on throughout the newscast, the mayor will be interviewed, and basic facts about Allen will be referenced on air."

Jon Sasser, executive director of "News 8 Daybreak," said all Allen residents are invited to come down and appear on the show at 5:30 a.m. Friday. The broadcast will continue through 7 a.m. The American Airlines Center is at 2500 Victory Ave. in Dallas. Visitors can park for free in the American Airlines center "A" lot.

Sasser said the project was developed as a way to reach out to communities that may rarely receive community-centered television news coverage. Many featured cities use the segment as an opportunity to promote upcoming events or features of the city that may attract visitors.

"It's really almost a free commercial for your city and to show off all the cool things that are going on there," Sasser said. "No size really matters as far as how big the city is and what county they're in. We feel every city in North Texas has something to offer and want to make sure everybody knows about it."

"[Allen] is such an up-and-coming community," Sasser said. "So many people are moving to Collin County, and Allen is becoming a destination. A few years ago, Allen fell far away from the DFW area, but as things start to grow farther north, Allen becomes one of the closest suburbs every year."

Cromwell said there's no way of gauging the impact the show might have on tourism, but she said it still serves as a free and fun way to showcase the city's shopping and entertainment amenities.

"We are still new to the market as an entertainment and shopping destination, so we want to take advantage of every opportunity we have to promote this to the region and beyond," she said.
